The Playing Big Foundations Workshop
is a transformative 2-day experience for women who want support & practical tools to realize their dreams.

Picture this: You’ve dedicated two days to prioritize your playing big – your personal and professional growth. You make your cup of coffee or tea, then settle into your favorite quiet space. You click a link and are brought into a circle with me and women around the world who – like you – are wanting to play bigger and realize their dreams.

Together, we’ll spend two days learning the ideas, practices and tools that can make a dramatic difference in helping us play bigger in our lives and work.

For the first time ever, I’m leading an intensive workshop on the foundational tools for playing bigger: Quieting the Inner Critic and Discovering Your Inner Mentor. You can attend live (July 17 & 18), or you can watch or listen to the recordings at your own convenience.

The Playing Big Foundations Workshop Is For You If:

  • You want to expand the impact you are making through your work.
  • You want to feel less burdened by fear and self-doubt.
  • You’ve discovered that some inner blocks are holding you back, and you want to change that.
  • You want to make a greater positive difference in the world but feel held back in some way.
  • You suspect it would be a whole lot more fun and a whole lot more fulfilling to play big. (YOU ARE RIGHT.)

In Their Own Words

Elizabeth Gilbert

“At last this very important book has been written, encouraging women to take up all the creative space they deserve in the world. I hope it will empower legions of women to step into their greatness. I couldn’t be happier about this publication.”

Elizabeth Gilbert
Author of Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic

Reverend Dr. Eboni Marshall Turman

“Tara Mohr’s Playing Big has changed my life. I started the course amidst a terrifying professional transition. I was welcomed and supported by Tara’s dynamic community of women from all over the world who not only affirmed that there is room for my gifts in the world, but also encouraged me to leap into my brilliance with courage and conviction. Since starting the program my salary has more than doubled, I have started my own LLC, and strategized next steps for my personal and professional success, all while learning to live with, and not be paralyzed by, my inner critic. Playing Big, both the course and the book, is filled with engaging content and effective exercises that mine women’s innermost aspirations and dreams. As a professor and public religious leader, I cannot say enough about the difference Playing Big has made in my life. Playing small is no longer an option!”

Reverend Dr. Eboni Marshall Turman
Assistant Professor of Theology and African American Religion at Yale University Divinity School

Kelly McGonigal, PH.D.

“Tara Mohr offers a new model of leadership, one that acknowledges and embraces the complex realities of women’s lives. Playing Big is the perfect catalyst for any woman who wants to go outside her comfort zone, find her voice, and embrace the biggest possibilities of her life.”

Kelly McGonigal, PH.D.
Author of The Willpower Instinct

“Playing Big and Tara’s generous wisdom has had a PROFOUND impact on my life…in ways that stretch beyond imagination. Being part of this course has helped me see myself in a bigger and broader light and given me the confidence, support and tools to grow my business, playfully explore my vision and gracefully take my place in this world to uplift humanity.”

Kirthi Nath, Creative Director and Lead Filmmaker at Cinemagical Media

“I’m EXTREMELY satisfied with what I got from this course! It is a collection of absolutely essential and brilliant tools that will be useful throughout my professional and personal life. THANK YOU for all the brilliance, work, thoughtfulness, knowledge, experience, connections, and (very importantly!) the love and passion that you put into this course!”

Beth Molnar, Associate Professor, Northeastern University & President, Board of Directors, Boston Area Rape Crisis Center

“I have always carried a confident outer executive presence that filled the room and boxed out the shrinking, space-saving girl within. Through Playing Big, I learned to embrace the fact that taking up space is my magnificent birthright. I more fully and beautifully show up, speak up and act up in the wide open overlap between inner confidence and outer approval. This program is life changing.”

Bernadette Merikle, Regional Director, Partnerships, Equal Opportunity Schools

Why Do I Do This?

Tara Sophia Mohr

I have been coaching brilliant women — talented, visionary women like you, with amazing gifts to share.

Early in my work, I started to notice that my brilliant women clients really couldn’t see their own brilliance. They couldn’t see that they were ready to play big, that they could be leaders in their industries and in their world.

I recognized that I had had the same struggle myself, and I felt that this — brilliant women holding back, underestimating themselves and not trusting their voices — this has to end. It has to end because the world needs our contributions.

When I take a look at the headlines, or watch a few minutes of the news, I’m struck by how the people in charge in our world don’t have the emotional intelligence, the wisdom, or the ethical integrity to use the power they have for good.

I want brilliant, visionary, compassionate, ethical, wise women I know to be alongside men, leading and holding power — because they are going to bring our world into balance and sanity.

My secret agenda with Playing Big is to a create world where the kind of people that you and I want to see leading and in power are leading. A world in which wise, compassionate, centered, purpose-filled leadership takes center stage.

I’ve seen again and again how support, community, and some tools for playing bigger can help us step into all we are capable of and all we long to do. Join us – so that you can play bigger in bringing your gifts and voice into the world.

With love,

The Playing Big Foundations Curriculum

Before the Workshop

Introduction & What is Playing Big

Through the guided preparatory materials, we’ll explore how to redefine playing big from the inside out. You’ll uncover a new sense of what playing big means to you (not what it means to your friends, family, coworkers and others) – a vision for playing big that doesn’t feel stressful, or like it leaves you in a tug of war between your aspirations and your responsibilities. This is a true playing big that works with your whole life.

You’ll also be able to see your particular playing big in a much broader context of a global movement of women at this moment in history. Understanding how your piece of the puzzle fits into the whole can powerfully increase your clarity and motivation about what you are doing.

DAY 1: JULY 17

Quieting The Inner Critic

Imagine for a moment what you’d be doing if that voice of “I’m not ready yet,” or “I need to get another degree before I can do that,” or “I don’t really know what I’m talking about here,” or “I can do that after I lose five pounds” wasn’t present any more? Imagine what women around the world would be doing if we all were able to quiet our inner critics.

I am passionate about every woman getting an Inner Critic 101 training so that self-doubt is no longer such a strong force in our lives.

Through our Inner Critic in-depth session, you’ll come to understand the root cause of your inner critic (it’s not what you think!), gain awareness of the sneaky ways it is present, and learn why the answer is not having more confidence. Most importantly, you’ll learn exactly what to do in the moment when self-doubt arises, to ensure that it doesn’t hold you back.

Through our work together you will:

  • Uncover the subtle and sneaky ways the inner critic is present in your life
  • Gain a better understanding of your critic’s roots – looking through personal, biological, and social lenses, because more consciousness around our critics leads to more freedom from them
  • Learn and practice three powerful tools you can use in the moment when self-doubt arises, so that it no longer holds you back

Optional Virtual Meet-Up

After our Day One session, you will have the opportunity to meet (virtually) in small groups with other participants for support and connection. This informal time will take place on Tuesday, July 17 from 1-2 pm Pacific.

DAY 2: JULY 18

Discovering Your Inner Mentor

We’ve all had those moments when in a difficult situation, we simply knew – with every fiber of our being – what the right course of action was. What if you could access that kind of clarity more reliably?

This module gives us a powerful tool to consistently access the most authentic, wise, and calm part of ourselves: our inner mentors. You can consult her on professional matters (how would she handle this client pitch?) and personal ones (how would she approach this difficult conversation with a friend?)

Through our work together you will:

  • Have the powerful experience of encountering your inner mentor, guided live by Tara, in a supportive circle of women
  • Get Tara’s guidance interpreting the visualization and addressing any challenging or confusing aspects
  • Learn practical ways you can live into your inner mentor more day to day
  • Be held accountable and supported as we each take a powerful step living into our inner mentors through a mini-project during the workshop

If you’ve already met your inner mentor through the Playing Big book exercise, that’s great! This will be an opportunity to visit with her again, develop a stronger relationship with her, step into her in new ways, and get Tara’s support around any questions or stuck places.

Concluding Session

In our Concluding Session on Day 2, you’ll have the opportunity to reflect on what you’ve learned and set intentions for your next steps. We’ll also share a wealth of resources to support you in your ongoing work. Then we’ll send you off with lots of love through our nourishing concluding circle activity – a favorite in all of our courses!

How It Works

The Playing Big Foundations Workshop is entirely virtual, delivered in an easy-to-use videoconference format. You can access our live sessions (July 17 & 18 from 9:30 am – 1:00 pm Pacific) with your smartphone, tablet or computer, or call in via any phone. All sessions are recorded and transcribed so you can participate at your convenience – or review the materials for a second go-around! This workshop is specifically designed so you can participate from anywhere in the world and in a way that works with your busy schedule.

The Playing Big Workshop includes:

  • Two half-day sessions with live teaching and coaching from Tara
  • New material that highlights Tara’s latest thinking since the publication of the Playing Big book
  • Worksheets that help you apply the learning
  • Additional audio, video, and written materials

What Would Change For You With More Support?

I know you’ve got lots of wonderful people in your life, but when it comes to this work of Playing Big, are you finding that you want something beyond that familiar circle?

Many, many women find they need a unique set of allies to step into playing big.

We need allies on a similar journey.

We need people who won’t judge or hack apart what we are working on when it is in that early, tender stage.

We need kindred spirits who share that desire to have an impact, not people who are threatened by it.

The Playing Big course experiences are here to give you that.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Logistics

What’s the schedule?
The Playing Big Workshop will run Tuesday, July 17 and Wednesday, July 18, 2018 with live sessions from 9:30 am – 1 pm Pacific each day. There will be an optional bonus session on Tuesday, July 17 from 1-2 pm Pacific – an informal time to meet in small groups with other participants for support and connection. To see how times convert for where you are, click here. All sessions will be recorded and posted to the course site within 12 hours.
Can I get recordings if I can’t attend the course calls live?
The program is designed to work whether you can attend live or not, and call recordings will be posted within 12 hours, as well as full transcripts. You can also attend one of our two days live and the other via recording, if that’s what your schedule necessitates. You will have access to the workshop membership site for three months following the event so you can revisit materials and/or go at your own pace. We will also provide a Dropbox link with all of the workshop materials in one easy-to-access folder that you can download for lifetime access.
What’s the investment?
You can register with one payment of $295. And good to note – alumnae of the Playing Big Foundations Workshop can apply this payment toward the tuition of the Playing Big Program or the Playing Big Facilitators Training so you will essentially receive an alum “credit” of $300 toward a future course.
I’m having technical trouble signing up.
No problem – we can help! Simply email playingbig (at) taramohr (dot) com and we’ll get you all set up.
Will I get to know other women in the workshop?
Yes! Playing Big offers an opportunity to connect with women around the world who are interested in playing bigger on their own terms. During this workshop, you’ll learn from other women’s stories and learnings in our discussions and sharing. We’ll also be hosting an optional virtual meet-up during the two day period. Course participants will be in small groups via video conference and have this time for getting to know each other. If you are looking for a more intensive, ongoing community experience, we recommend you get started with the workshop this summer and then join our longer Playing Big program (April 2019) or Playing Big Facilitators Training (October 2018).
How is the Playing Big Foundations Workshop different from the Playing Big book?
The workshop is all about being live with Tara and a community of women, learning from seeing how Tara coaches you & others with the tools, and applying the learning through exercises and practices during our workshop sessions. Think of it as bringing the book alive, and being in a teaching/learning experience around them.
How is this workshop different from Tara’s main Playing Big course or her Facilitators Training?
Here’s how it works:

  • Playing Big Foundations Workshop: an immersive 2-day experience that goes deep into the Playing Big core foundations: Quieting Your Inner Critic and Discovering Your Inner Mentor.

  • Playing Big Program: a six month course that includes the foundational Inner Critic & Inner Mentor topics as well as ten additional modules to support your Playing Big.

  • The Playing Big Facilitators Training is for coaches, therapists, mentors, mangers, and educators who want in-depth training on our tools for their own journey as well as training in how to use it with clients, mentees or students.

And here’s some great news: if you take the Playing Big Foundations Workshop and would also like to take one of our other courses later on, your Playing Big Workshop tuition will be applied toward the cost of the later courses.

Organizations & Employer Sponsorship

My employer sometimes sponsors professional development. Do you have something I can give them?
Yes, we have a document you can provide your employer. Click here to download the 2018 Playing Big Professional Development document.
I work inside an organization or company. Is playing big mostly for entrepreneurs?
Not at all! One of the amazing things about this program is the mix of women entrepreneurs and women working inside organizations. In fact, in our recent session, we were an almost even mix – 49% entrepreneurs, 51% women working inside organizations!

The topics we cover in the Playing Big Foundations Workshop – quieting your inner critic and accessing your inner mentor – are transformational for women across all kinds of careers, including “encore” careers and job transitions. Here’s what some women who took a Playing Big program when working for organizations had to say:

I started Playing Big at the same time I moved into a corporate senior management role – a huge leap from the isolated desk research role that I had been in. I have been running into my own old habits turning into obstacles. I turn to the Playing Big lessons when I find a new struggle that I can’t resolve and the content leads me to look at situations in new ways, opening new solutions and opportunities. Playing Big has increased my confidence and effectiveness, while lowering my stress and worry. Perfectly delivered to help me grow into the leader that I have been asked to be. – Yvonne Juarez

I’ve experienced significant changes because of this program. I am able to put my learning, qualifications, and skills to best use because I communicate more clearly. I find that others are more clear about my role and contributions, which means they know when to come to me for input and when the request should go elsewhere. My profile is also growing in the industry, which is positive for the organization I work for. I manage my time better because I understand my role and worth, so delegate tasks more easily when appropriate. I also communicate more confidently with senior managers and with the people who report to me. I am generally more professional, happier, and putting energy into areas that align with the organization’s mission, as well as my own values. – Joelle Adams

I’m not sure…

I feel ambivalent about the very idea of “playing big.”
You are not alone. Many women share these mixed feelings about the notion of playing big. Many of us worry that playing big will mean leaving behind things we love — free time, or the quiet and simple parts of our lives. Many of us worry that playing bigger would mean we’d somehow stand out or stand apart from the people we love — and we don’t want that. Many of us feel fatigued by our culture’s need for everything to be big, bigger, biggest. We know that’s not sustainable for human beings or the planet. We don’t want to perpetuate that kind of thinking.

All of these ambivalences are very normal — and in my view, they are precisely the reason why women need a context and a journey to redefine and reclaim playing big for themselves — to find a playing big that is aligned with their values, allows them to stay in community and relationship, and that’s good for the earth, too.

In the Playing Big programs, each woman defines playing big on her own terms. For most, playing big does not mean owning an empire or getting overtaken by a drive toward success. Playing big means courageously going for your personal dreams and longings and having the positive impact your heart wants to have in the world.

I want to play bigger, but I already feel exhausted and overwhelmed, and I’m trying to do less in my life. How does this workshop fit with that?
In our approach, playing big isn’t about striving harder or doing more. It is about honestly accepting one’s true aspirations and callings and playing big in going for them. Because playing big leads to women being more aligned with their authentic selves, and more tapped into their passions, it generally creates more energy, less stress, and far less striving in women’s lives. It’s an alternative to perfectionistic go-go-going – a deeper path of self-actualization.
Honestly, I feel intimidated and nervous about signing up.
Rest assured – this is very common! Many women hear a voice in their head saying, “You won’t fit in with this crowd of women,” or “Who do you think you are?”

Here’s why: The part of you that loves perfectionism and the familiar, the part that keeps putting off playing big for just another couple years…? That part of you is shakin’ in its boots, knowing that signing up for a Playing Big program will mean shaking things up.

Signing up is a significant first step toward playing bigger. Fear and the inner critic will naturally come up.

By the end of the workshop, you’ll understand why the inner critic arises in these kinds of situations and what you can do to quiet its voice.

But for now, can you notice this scared and critical part of you but not take direction from it?

Let your aspirations, your passion, your hopes — not fear or the inner critic — be in charge of the decision of whether to sign up.

What if I don’t know how I want to play big?
That’s okay. These are foundational tools to use in life and work every day — no matter what your current situation. Some participants come into the workshop with a specific idea of what playing bigger looks like for them. Others aren’t sure, but find that the skills and tools we learn in the course allow them to play bigger in all areas of their lives and support them as their next passion or professional direction emerges.
I’m not sure if online learning would really work for me.
It’s a great question. Many of our past course participants have been surprised at how easy and engaging the online format is. Here are a few things to keep in mind: The workshop materials and sessions are always simple to access and very user-friendly. Our highly-skilled team is available to answer any questions and support you in navigating any new-to-you technologies. Last but not least, the advantages of a distance-learning approach are that you’ll connect with like-minded women from all over the world and in a way that works with your schedule.
What if I can’t attend the live sessions?
No problem! Within 12 hours, you’ll have access to a video recording, audio version, and (a few days later) written transcripts. Plus, all workshop materials are yours for life — so even if an unexpected change in your schedule happens, you can still get the full value of the program when you are ready.
What is your refund policy?
If your plans change prior to the workshop, you can request a full refund prior to Tuesday, July 10 (one week before the workshop begins). After July 10, if for some reason you aren’t able to participate, you can either transfer your tuition to a future session, or to another Playing Big program. If you attend the workshop and find it isn’t a fit for you, simply let us know during Day 1 of the program, and we will refund your tuition and cancel your participation for Day 2.
I’m just not sure.
Well, if you were my coaching client I’d ask you to:

  • Check in with your body: How does the idea of registering feel in your body — good and exciting? Good but scary/exhilarating? Those are good signs.
  • Notice what part of you is hesitant: Your inner wisdom? Listen up. Inner critic? Voice of fear? Not good voices to listen to. Question what they are saying. Especially question any voices telling you that you somehow don’t measure up to being in this group, or won’t be able to “do it right,” or that the time to do this has to be just right.
  • Explore: Is there a particular fear or worry you have? If so, write it down and examine it in the light.
  • Ask yourself: If you knew you couldn’t fail at this, and that you’d fit in beautifully with the group — what would you do?
  • Reflect: What are your intentions for the coming year? Does this feel well aligned, or not?
